Balance In Fitness And Life

Can you raise your right knee in the air without falling? How about your left one? Can you walk in a straight line while looking over your left shoulder and not fall? These are all tests of our body’s ability to balance. To keep it simple, balance is when we can control our body’s center of gravity in relation to our base of support. When it comes to balance, there are 3 important systems that our bodies will utilize:

  • Physical feedback from muscles and joints that send information to your brain about where they are in space
  • Visual feedback—your eyes tell your brain where the horizon is to define what is level
  • Vestibular (inner ear) feedback—the position of your head tells your brain which direction your head is tilting
The Importance of Training for Balance
  • Balance helps keep you upright and prevents injuries
  • Balance in your fitness ensures that your muscles are equally trained
  • Balance in your flexibility and range of motion ensures that your body can move without restriction
The Connection To Our Spirit
As we read above, balance requires three elements – physical, visual and vestibular. Interestingly enough, the same can be applied to spiritual balance. If we ever feel off, we simply need to come back to those 3 things – what we “feel”, “see” and “hear”.
Assess whether anything going on in your life has you feeling “off balanced”.
  • Emotional – what are you feeling?
  • Visual – what are your eyes ‘fixed’ on? What are you pursuing?
  • Auditory – what have you been hearing and listening to?
Training for Spiritual Balance
  • Emotional – 1 Peter 5:7, Philippians 4:4-9
  • Visual – Proverbs 3:7; Colossians 3-14
  • Auditory – Proverbs 2:1-5, Revelation 3:20
